The Queen Square Chambers Employment Team is pleased to announce our Autumn 2010 Seminar Programme.
The series will feature four seminars across the West Country and Wales and will explore the provisions and likely impact of the Equality Act 2010.
The Equality Act 2010 represents the biggest shake-up of our discrimination law for the last 30 years. For the first time, all of the discrimination legislation is brought together in one Act. However, this is not a simple consolidation of our existing law. There are a number of important changes and new concepts which practitioners must be familiar with, as the main provisions of the Act come into force in October 2010.
The Seminar focuses on exploring the key changes and comparing the old with the new, so that practitioners can understand and apply the new law in practice.
Discrimination: Past imperfect and the future tense?
This session will explore the need for the Act and discuss the new language and concepts to be applied in the future.
To whom shall I compare thee?
The correct choice of comparator has been an issue that has troubled practitioners and tribunals for many years. The wrong choice can be fatal to a claim or defence. This session focuses on the use of comparators in the new regime and includes the effect on the House of Lords judgement in London Borough of Lewisham v Malcom and the removal of the need for a comparator in victimisation claims.
