The team of Inquests and Inquiries barristers at Queen Square Chambers are experienced when it comes to handling the legal, practical and emotionally sensitive aspects of inquests and inquiries, often high-profile by nature and, in some cases, subject to extensive media coverage.
Our barristers accept instructions to act for interested parties including bereaved families, individuals and regulatory bodies in inquests conducted at Coroners’ Courts, providing a tailored, thorough and supportive service throughout the process. Where Public Inquiries are concerned, the team has experience of representing a variety of stakeholders including government agencies, local authorities, law-enforcement agencies and private commercial organisations.
As a result of long-standing Crown Court experience, our barrister have developed excellent advocacy and delivery skills which lend themselves well to the practical handling of cases conducted before the Coroner or the Chair of an Inquiry, particularly, examining witnesses and presenting complicated legal arguments. In addition, many of the team also have experience in the (frequent) civil actions that arise from a fatality. Due to Chambers’ comprehensive understanding and experience in relation to health and safety matters, the team has significant expertise in relation to inquests and inquiries where health and safety law has a large part to play. There are also barristers in the team who undertake clinical negligence work and so can apply their expertise of the clinical setting to a particular case.
Fields of particular experience include:
· Fatal road traffic accidents
· Fatal accidents on the railways
· Industrial accidents leading to a fatality
· Death arising from medical incidents
· Death arising in care homes or similar institutions
· Death in police custody
