Introduction

Ruth Armstrong is an effective criminal advocate with particular strengths in the areas of:

  • Sexual Offending
  • Representation of the mentally ill
  • Drugs
  • Fraud

Present instructions include cases involving allegations of branding, unlawful imprisonment and torture.

Sexual offending

Ruth Armstrong is known for her abilities as a searching questioner who is able to examine witnesses effectively, but with sensitivity and without alienating tribunals.

Instructions in this area have included the following:

R v B multiple complainant historical rape

R v R underage defendant accused of inciting buggery in younger sibling

Ruth Armstrong has particular expertise representing mentally ill clients, having qualified as a MIND advocate. Cases have included those in the classic area of representing arsonists.

Drugs cases

R v P successful defence in multi-handed drugs conspiracy

Ruth Armstrong has in the past acted as a visiting lecturer, teaching criminal evidence.

R v M defence of defendant against extensive Crown allegations of counterfeiting currency

Her defence practice has included being instructed in sex cases (including rape, pornographic images, young defendants and multiple young complainants), arson, drugs supply, violence (s.18 and below), robbery, dishonesty (including frauds) further to significant conspiracies to defraud, burgle and rob.  

Prosecution work has included instructions from the CPS, DEFRA, RCPO, DWP and Local Authorities.  Ruth is frequently instructed by the CPS in cases involving sex, violence and drugs and has been used by CPS regions both on and off circuit.

Horse riding, snow sports, fell-walking and squash.
